Can I Donate Blood While On This Diet?Updated 2 months ago

Donating blood is a generous and impactful act, but while on a Very Low-Calorie Diet (VLCD) like ours, there are important considerations to keep in mind:

Recommendation:

  • It is generally not recommended to donate blood while on a VLCD due to the low calorie intake. To safely donate, it's best to come off the plan for at least a week prior to your donation.

Preparation for Donation:

  • The Blood Service advises including iron-rich foods in your diet for the week leading up to your donation. This helps ensure your haemoglobin levels are sufficient for donation and reduces the risk of anaemia post-donation.
  • Increase your calorie intake to at least 1200 calories during this preparatory week to support your body’s needs.

Iron Absorption:

  • While New You Plan products are fortified with iron, the body absorbs iron more effectively from real foods. Ensuring adequate iron intake from food sources is important for meeting the Blood Service’s haemoglobin requirements.

Post-Donation Recovery:

  • Donating blood requires additional calories for your body to replenish the donated supply. With a VLCD, recovery might take longer, and there’s a higher risk of experiencing dizziness and fatigue.

Your health and safety are paramount, so it’s crucial to adjust your diet accordingly before donating blood. If you have any questions or need further guidance, please reach out to our support team. We’re here to help you make informed decisions about your health and well-being.
