What Is Ketosis?Updated 2 months ago

Understanding Ketosis and Its Role in The New You Plan

Ketosis is a metabolic state where the body shifts from using carbohydrates as its primary energy source to utilising stored body fat. Typically, the body relies on carbohydrates from food for energy. However, during ketosis, it taps into fat stores for fuel.

How Ketosis Works:

When you start a Very Low-Calorie Diet (VLCD) like The New You Plan, your body begins depleting its glycogen reserves (stored carbohydrates). This process usually takes about 3 to 7 days. Once glycogen stores are exhausted, the body shifts to burning fat, producing molecules known as ketones, signalling the onset of ketosis.

The Role of Ketosis in Weight Loss:

While ketosis is often associated with ketogenic diets, it's important to note that achieving ketosis is not necessary for weight loss on our plan. The success of our diet primarily comes from the VLCD component. For those interested in a ketogenic approach, starting with shakes and gradually incorporating meals and bars can be effective. Most customers enter ketosis with a daily carb intake of 45 to 55 grams. If following a ketogenic path, it's advisable to avoid supplementary items like snacks and water flavourings.

Signs of Ketosis:

Increased energy levels

Reduced hunger

Fruity or acetone-like breath smell

It's crucial to distinguish ketosis from ketoacidosis, a dangerous condition seen in uncontrolled diabetes. Ketosis is a natural and temporary state that occurs when following a low-carb lifestyle.
